The East Valley's newest town, and one of its fastest-growing

San Tan Valley spent decades as an unincorporated Pinal County community before residents voted to incorporate in August 2025, making it Arizona's newest official town. It's grown fast doing it -- population climbed from roughly 82,000 in the 2020 census to an estimated 103,000 by 2022, a 22.8% jump over the prior decade, driven largely by master-planned communities like Pecan Creek South, San Tan Heights, Archer Meadows, and Johnson Ranch. Local government is still transitioning some services from Pinal County to the new town over the course of 2026, but that transition is about municipal administration, not about whether you need a permit to remove a tree on your own property -- Arizona still doesn't have a statewide residential tree-removal permit requirement, and that hasn't changed with San Tan Valley's incorporation.

New construction, similar East Valley tree species

Like Gilbert and parts of Queen Creek, most of San Tan Valley's tree canopy is relatively young, planted as part of newer residential development rather than inherited from decades-old neighborhoods. That doesn't make it immune to the East Valley's two most common hazard-call species -- see our sissoo and mesquite guide for what to watch for on a newer property, and check whether your specific community has its own HOA landscaping rules via our HOA guide before scheduling a removal.
